Laughing
Gas: Formed in 1992, this troupe, most closesly associated
with Mental Floss (the legendary South Florida troupe). They have
shown an ability to last the test of time at a quality level equal
to many troupes in Chicago or New York. Directed by the ever funny
and extremely talented Gerald Owens, the troupe has shown a high
level of consistency of talent and quality of shows.
Each
show continues to be very different from the last as the cast
rotates and the short-form and long-form improvisational games
performed are varied show-to-show. Even the games that are repeated
are done in different ways each time, uniquely enthralling their
audiences with the performance. The pressure of continuing to
be fresh has actually generated a large pool of acting talent
that is called upon. This has resulted in the actors of Laughing
Gas being some of the most sought after for theater and film productions.
Independent film makers find the improvisational talents as assets
on the set and the cast has proven very capable in various theaters
throughout the region. As cast members return while not in other
productions, they rejoin the troupe seamlessly providing new material
and ever-changing chemistry.
Cast members include actors featured throughout
South Florida theater, graduates of The Second City, and according
to one cast members website, several members of Mensa. The "brains"
really help to make their comedy not potty humor, but high quality
laughs that the audience remembers and can repeat at the water
cooler the next day. High school kids to the older crowd all find
a variety of reasons for enjoying the show. Unfortunately, like
most improvisation, it is "lightning in a bottle" and
is difficult to relate later. You have to see this show to truly
appreciate the level that their comedy has reached.
